Payment
Payment must come through normal banking channels, for example inward remittance from abroad or an NRE, NRO or FCNR(B) account. Keep the bank records for every payment.
Paperwork
Expect to share your passport, PAN, address proof and photographs. If you sign from abroad, documents and any power of attorney must be executed and attested as the law requires. Ask your lawyer.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Rules change. Please confirm current rules with your bank, a chartered accountant and a lawyer.
A balanced view
We do not promise rental income, price growth or returns. Property values can fall as well as rise, and exchange rates, taxes and holding costs affect what you earn or save. Decide on your own needs and take independent advice.
Tax on rent and on sale, and the rules for sending money abroad, depend on your situation and change from time to time. Repatriating sale proceeds is allowed only within the conditions set by the RBI and by tax rules. Speak to a chartered accountant who knows NRI taxation before you commit.
